Was this a good deal?
I don't know much about cars but today I took my chances of selling my mom's junked car to this junk yard that sells used auto parts. The car was 1992 Crown Victoria V8 4.6 L engine, its transmission was busted, its paint was worn, the leather seats were usable but ripped, and we had the original title . I sold the car for $200…I was originally told $350 by the company but when the tow truck guy came by…he offered $200. I tried a long time trying to get him to give me the price I was given or at least $250 but he said that if he went past $200 he would lose more money than he would make.
Did I ***** up on the price….was $200 a reasonable pay off or could I have gone to more. His reasons were that the car is scrap and:
*the busted transmission is no prob since he is just gonna sell the engine and hope someone buys
*the seats can't even be sold
*the tires will be sold $2 a piece
*the rest of the car will be crushed and sold for metal
Then he went through the usual mumbo jumbo of gas and towing and what not…I mean understand its tough work but its a car that you take that you can sell, fix, scrap and make your money back in my opinion…but I don't know enough about cars or the used/scrap/junkyard business to really have a cohesive argument.
Did I get gipped?
THANKS for all those that reply!!
–CURIOUS
P.S. A friend eyed the car really quick and said I shouldn't sell the car for less than $500…so I feel like I got screwed?

You didn't get screwed, you chose to sell to a junk yard rather than having to deal with retailing it. You got what it's worth.

It was a 17 year old car that needed a bundle of expensive work. Your friend was wrong,as it wasn't worth $500. It was worth $200.

$200 is about right, there not going to sell most of the parts from it, and it won't bring a hell of alot more for scarp. You did ok.If you had taken it there yourself you might have gotten more for it, but thats a pain in the **** to tow it, and a waste of gasoline.
