Used ac compressor? please help?
~jenjen~ asked:
Will a used ac compressor work fine for my car? It's a 96 chev cav and I don't want to spend a lot of money. Is my best bet a junk yard? And will an auto repair shop instal it? Thanks for the help!

most times yes, best bet is to have the shop get it for you-warrentee issues- they will install it for you, but it might be cheaper in the long run to get a new or rebuilt one (both should be availible at the parts store…..

I think a better question is do you know the salvage yard. Most respectable buisnesses give you 30 days from date of purchase on most parts. Just have it ready to go in as soon as you buy it.

All junkyard parts are a gamble. Unless you have some way to test it, you're taking a risk because most junkyards won't give you a refund, only an exchange. Remember that cars in junkyards are there for a reason.

Have the shop provide the used part (get it from the junkyard) rather than you going to get it and taking it to the shop to install it. The shop may mark up the price a bit, but they also will have to replace the compressor if it is no good.
If you bring a shop a part, and tell them to put that part in your car, they will do it. If the part you provide is bad, they will charge you the labor to remove and replace it again. If you take the car to the shop and tell them to get a used compressor and install it, they will be responsible for the cost of additional labor if the junkyard part is bad.

Fire is smoking *****. No respectable shop will order a part from a junkyard and give a warranty on it. Just buy a new or rebuilt one from the shop that installs it for you. You are also going to need to replace the accumulator and orifice tube as well if they are going to give you any type of warranty also. So there is no cheap way of fixing other then if you just roll down your windows.
