salvage or junk yard in the austin tx area?

I'm not really sure, but i'd assume that there would be some on the outskirts of town at least.

For the building supplies, I'd check out the Habitat for Humanity ReStore (at 310 Comal St). They provide surplus and salvaged building materials and there is always a good selection there. You're also donated to charity when you buy there.
As far as junkyards go, I've been having the same issue. I haven't been able to find a good one since I've moved here two years ago. There are a few good recycling/scrap yards, but all of those have stopped selling recently for some reason.
