Is it possible to sell your car to a junk yard even if you owe money on it still?
Gabrielle R asked:
I have a 2001 Saab 9-3 Turbo 2.0L that needs another engine. My warranty paid for the last one. But my mechanic got it from a junk yard and that warranty on it is only good for so long. The repairs are going to cost me too much. Everything else is in perfect condition. Just not the engine. Any ideas on what to do?

A reputable salvage yard is going to want the title if they purchase your vehicle.

A junk yard rarely pays you more than $50 for junk cars WITH a title. Your real choice is to replace the motor again. Either gamble with another junk yard motor, or a warrantied new motor.

I wouldn't like to be a co-conspirator in an attempt to commit fraud, because that's what it looks like to me. However if the road tax has run out or is lost, surely legally you would have no choice than to scrap it? If you get what i'm saying.

It's possible, but not a good idea. A less-than-reputable scrap yard will scrap your car without a title if it's taken care of quickly, but if they are caught, you could be sued or put into jail for fraud. Best case, if you ever stop paying, and your bank comes to repossess your car, and finds out what happened, you're going to be on the hook for some serious money.
That being said, the vast majority of scrap yards would rather have a title or bill of sale for a car before accepting it.

to answer the question first. No, you can't sell what you don't own. Sounds like maybe you're hard on engines? You say your warranty paid for the last one. I doubt they paid for a junk yard engine. You and the mechanic split the extra, or what? Well, looks like it caught up. Get a decent engine, take better care of it. Or park it, and make the payments until it's paid off, then sell it for parts.

No. If you don't have the title the car isn't yours to sell.

put it on ebay or craigslist and explain the situation if the payment can cover the rest of your loan you will be okay
